A lot of questions

Another news item which kept lingering in my thoughts the whole day.

Why did they target only women in western attire and not men? When did pants and shirts that most of the Indian men wear become our traditional clothing? 1827 A.D. ?? Why not stop all men in western attire, chase them, swear at them and beat them? Why did they beat only women who were in the pub and not even a single man? Does the Rig veda say, Men can go to pub and drink?

Who are they to tell me what to wear and what not to wear? Who are they to dictate where I should go and where I shouldn’t?

Are there any followers of this so called political party? If there are any, shouldn’t we be admitting them to an institute for mentally(socially??) retarded people? Weren’t political parties supposed to provide welfare schemes or at least promises to people? Has this party ever done any good for the society? May be a water tank, a bus stop, a public toilet at least? What do we call a group which has not done any significant philanthropic activity or a welfare deed but only disturbing and harassing people? Terrorists?? What are the real police doing? Why couldn’t they arrest these moral police when there is a video proof? Why is the central government not empathizing with it’s female citizens?

Why didn’t anyone stop to help when these women were in danger? Are we so irresponsible that we would go to a pub and drink to oppose this group and not stop our vehicles to protect a woman in trouble?

Why do they harass only women? Is it because most women are physically weak? Or is it an expression of fear that women have become equal to men? Women are educated, they go to a job, they dream about their future – A result of a silent war that lasted for more than hundred years against people who were obsessed with female infanticide, sati, illiteracy, dowry deaths and a lot more evils against Indian women. Just another idiocy to fight against. Where are Karate, Kung fu and judo classes in Bangalore?

If Mahatma Gandhi was alive today, he would have said, “Real freedom is only when a woman wearing jeans can walk safely on M.G. road in the day.”

Ethics and Software

“Infy fines CEO for breaking rule”

How many companies have fined their CEO? I was amazed at the brave and honest decision taken by Infy. The issue was as simple as not reporting the change in his share ownership in one BD. Infy has asked Gopalakrishnan to pay a penalty of 5,00,000 rupees towards charity. Infy’s

Infy has always been an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs. The answer to Narayana Murthy’s quest for ethical and profitable business is Infosys. This news has come out at the right time when Politics has entered even Software companies. Infy has always been in the forefront in enforcing ethics within the organization. Hats off to Infy!!

One reason to regret for not accepting Infy’s job offer after college :)

YAC:Yet Another Crap

Edmund Hillary, First on Everest, Dies at 88
Report: MySpace issued subpoena in teen suicide case
Open Source Security Bugs Uncovered
Online Video Sites Double Popularity in 2007
Asteroid Unlikely to Collide With Mars
NASA sets new February 7 launch date for shuttle

Scanning through the news items today, I got a glimpse of the above few.
I’m not going to express in this post How good I feel about Edmund Hillary or the pain and sympathy I had on reading about Online harrassment. Nor about the excitement cast off because of the asteroid not hitting Mars. :(

Open Source Security flaws unveiled by Open Source Hardening Project. This is a subject of interest to me. I’m no open source guru. Nor am I an expert in proprietory software development model. But luckily, I’ve got the taste of both the worlds. A long lasting debate between FOSS gurus and companies: Open Source vs Proprietory Products. How many times had I heard this crap over and over?

Why should religion be brought into software? After all, a business is meant to make money no matter what your company’s vision and strategic direction might be. Do young open source Software Engineers lack the ability to step out and look at the overall picture?

This news item would definitely be an icing on the cake for companies giving out proprietory softwares. The new propaganda from their side which I heard in a recent meeting: “Does no virus till date mean, Linux is the most secure OS? Open Source Softwares have more security flaws than proprietory softwares. blah..blah..blah..”

Open source softwares have their own advantages. But they lack Customer focus. In proprietory softwares, a defect wouldn’t stay longer than the next patch cycle if a customer demands for a fix. This is one set back which is the main reason why companies think twice before adopting free softwares into their work environment.

I cannot reason out one thing: “Why would all Open Source enthusiasts target Microsoft as their villain when there are so many companies making proprietory softwares?”

Tunguska Event in Mars

An asteroid which is the size of a football field is likely to hit Mars on January 30th. Near Earth Object Program enthusiasts are excited about this event. “What if the asteroid changes its course towards Earth?” Well, that is likely to happen only in movies. It made me search for more information and I ended up reading about Tunguska Event which happened in 1908 at Russia. How would you deflect an asteroid? Would we use nuclear missiles or create a collision with the asteroid or use antimatter to destroy it? Search proceeds..
